This month we persuaded several notable Yorkshire
folk to tell us about their secret ‘happy place’; somewhere they
go to relax or get away from their hectic life. Unfortunately for
many of them, they work outside the county while I, on the other
hand, spend my working days within the Ridings – so where
would my happy place be?
My first thought was the Galpharm Stadium
where my beloved Huddersfield Town play, but then I’ve suffered too much heartache there,
so that’s out.
I find there’s nothing much better than just taking a quiet
stroll from home, visiting the local churchyard where there is
some wonderful wildlife, flowers and impressive trees. I walk by
the nearby beck and across fields and tracks from where there are
great views and after no time at all I’ve sorted out most
of my problems.
But probably the most poignant place for
me is Stainforth Force and the old packhorse bridge in Ribblesdale.
It’s where I
really started my ‘career’ in the Dales after being
introduced to the Yorkshire countryside by my school which ran
an outdoor activities centre near the falls. For hours I’ve
watched salmon attempting to climb the rushing water and they’ve
instilled in me that very important lesson: if at first you don’t
succeed, try, try, then try again. |
