Waddy
I am trying to find the ancestors of Richard Waddy, 1734-1813, who is buried
at Nunmonkton, Yorkshire, and was for 40 years master of the charity school there.
His wife, Jane's, dates are 1740-1826. I know quite a lot about Richard Waddy's
descendants, of whom I am one, but nothing about his antecedents, and it would
help solve a family mystery if I could find out who his father was, and where
he was born? I have now lived in Yorkshire for 2 years, but haven't come across
any Waddys so far! Anybody out there?

Wagener
Could anyone help me with any information about my grandparents who lived in Keighly from about 1900-1940. My grandad was a dentist, John Harman Wagener, and Grandma, Marian Louisa, was a dental mechanic. She died in the mid 1940s. They lived in a grand house called 'Aire View' where he also practiced his dentistry. This house was bought by the headmaster of Bingley Grammer school at the time. They had six children: Otto, Raven, Roland, Noel (my father), Enid and Mona, who have all now passed on. There are stories in our family about Danish origins and we really don't know where the name Wagener comes from. Grandad studied in America at Yale and/or Harvard. He was also a Diamond Sculls in the Henley regatta.
If anyone knows anymore about them or the old house I would dearly appreciate if you could let me know.

I am seeking information on Richard and Matthew Walker. They both boarded the immigrant ship 'Thomas & William', leaving the port of Scarborough in April 1774 bound for Nova Scotia. Richard and Matthew both list their occupations as Farmers and as both coming from Yorkshire; it's a possibility they are brothers or are related. Richard lists his age as 33 (born abt 1741); Matthew is 24 (born abt 1750). Richard notes his reason for immigrating as "Going to seek for better employ" and Matthew notes his reason as "All the small farms taken into large ones in his Parish, could not get Bread". I have hit a Nova Scotia brick wall with my oldest paternal grandfather, Matthew Walker, who was born about 1762 (birthplace unknown). Help is requested on the subject of William Ward, wife Elizabeth and son Moses. I am interested in family details concerning their life before their immigration to Nova Scotia, Canada aboard the Two Friends, March 7, 1774, sailing from the port of Hull, UK.
Before their immigration, the family is believed to have been tenant farmers in the Yorkshire area. Documents suggest that due to rent increases by their landlord, presumably because of farmland enclosure practices, the family accepted the risks of removing themselves to Nova Scotia. As the family were presumably farmers, I believe records of lease holdings from period manors, taxation records, etc. are key to this search. Other suggestions of documents and their sources are acceptable reasons to reply to this request.
This immigration movement locally referred to in Nova Scotia as Lt. Governor Michael Franklin of Nova Scotia initiated ?The Yorkshire Immigration?.

I am looking for information on the Sheffield family from the Huttons
Ambo/Malton area. William Sheffield (b. 1762) married Sophia
Ward (b. 1762). They had several children. My ancestor is their
son, Thomas B Sheffield (b. 1797). He emigrated to the US (first
Kentucky, later New York) about 1819. His oldest brother was
William Sheffield (b. 1787). He stayed in Yorkshire and was a
surgeon. He eventually moved to Farmanby. Thomas had a sister,
Sophia Sheffield (b. 1799), who also emigrated to New York. She
never married and became a naturalized US citizen (fairly rare
for a woman at that time). Her occupation on a US census is listed
as "lady". Another brother (? unsure of their relationship),
Richard H Sheffield (b. 1789), came to New York around 1819.
Another sister, Elizabeth Sheffield (b. 1791) married a William
Robinson (b. 1786) and emigrated to New York with their 6 children.
Another sister, Sarah Sheffield (b. 1793) married a Robert Sutton
(b. 1790). They stayed in Yorkshire, but their children emigrated
to New York.
To the best of my knowledge, this family was associated
with the parish church of St. Michaels, Old Malton. Any info would
be greatly appreciated. I'm hoping to make a trip to Yorkshire
from the US next summer. I'd love to have a firm grasp of where
to start my research.

My great-grandfather, George Ward, was born in 1868, I think in Millgate, Selby, Yorkshire. (I believe his birth was not registered until 1882). He married Annie Drury on 26 Nov 1898 and they came to Australia with their daughter, Adelaide May Ward. I believe his parents may have been John Ward who was married to Elizabeth Hobman.
I can find no information on George Ward's death in Australia and believe he may have been deported back to England after the death (suicide or murder?) of his wife, Annie Drury. Can anyone help?

Just started doing a family tree and it is so addictive and exciting. Become
stuck though with my Great Great Grandfather William Watson born in Skipton
(possibly 1857-1877) and married a Catherine (nee Gilbourne or Goulbourn).
They had a son William Arnold Watson (born about 1896). They all went to live
in Shanghai and when the war was over William Arnold Watson returned to Skipton
to visit and met and married Frances Tilley in about 1919 who had brothers
and sisters, Edward, George, Elsie and Colin. Perhaps some of these names and
details rings a bell with someone? Somewhere along the line there is a Lucy

To all readers of Dalesman, especially my Whaley kin of Hawes, Gayle, Appersett
and Burnersett: I am descended from Ann Blenkhorn Whaley b.1876, John Whaley
b.1839, John Chapman Whaley b.1804, John Whaley b.1772, (?)Thomas b.1753. I
am querying if Thomas Foster was James Whaley of Appersett who was Chapel Warden
at Hawes in 1750 and was he born 1698, and from Coleraine in Ireland? I have
much Whaley history from 1066 up to present days and would be glad of any correspondence.

Whaley
I am looking for information on my father, James Whaley, born 18-11-1891, I think in Redmire. He went to school in Askrigg and had five sisters. He went to fight in World War I, came back and married a local woman 20 years older than himself. They moved to Liverpool where became a butcher on Queens drive. His wife died. He didn't remarry for 10 years. My mother was 10 years younger than my father, and I have two sisters. Sometime in the late 1940s they moved to Thirkleby to a small holding and in 1955 moved to Ripon to run a sweet shop. He died on the 28-07-1962. Hope you can help me find out more about my father.

Whitehead
My grandfather was Ernest William Whitehead, born 1908 in Redcar,
Yorkshire. He was the son of John Henry & Ada (Winter) Whitehead.
Ada was from Redcar and John Henry from Kirkleatham. He was the
son of John Whitehead and Mary Jane Tutty.
John & Ada had 6 children; 1) Elsie Ada born
1899, Redcar - she married George Johnson in 1920 in Middlesbrough.
She went on to run a boarding house in Redcar and had a son who
became a concert pianist. 2) Hilda Mary born 1901, Redcar - she
married Arthur Meadows in 1922 in Middlesbrough. 3) Frances Lilian "Lily" born
1902 in Redcar - she married Sidney Williams in 1923 in Middlesbrough.
They settled in Brambles Farm and had quite a few children, some
of whom were Albert, Mavis and Mearle. Not 100% sure of that last
one. 4) Edith May born 1904 in Redcar - she married Charles Mountain
in 1928 in Middlesbrough. She became a hairdresser. 5) Ernest William
born 1908 in Redcar. Married Mary Elizabeth "Molly" Williams
in 1930 in Middlesbrough. They emigrated to South Africa with their
3 sons, Jack, Lewis and Ernest. 6) Sidney Mellaby born 1910 in
Redcar. Married a lady named "Connie" and
they possibly lived in Sheffield or Leeds.
I recently received a very old photo taken at the
turn of the last century. It was taken at a wedding and is of a
large group of people at a wedding. We believe they are mostly
Whiteheads but there are no names attached. If anyone knows anything
about any of these Whiteheads please contact me. It would be greatly
appreciated.

I recently found my great-great-great-grandparents and their children, namely James and Susannah Whiteley. James was born 1796 in Norland, Halifax, and Susannah in 1801, also Norland.
On the 1841 census they are living in what I make out to be Glenberks Lane, Halifax.
James is described as an Agrigultural Labourer.
Their children are Joseph born 1823, Martha born 1830, John born 1828, Henry born 1830, Mary born 1835, Hannah born 1837, and Jane born 1840.
I can't find them on later census as a family.

I am looking for information about Benjamin Whiteley and his wife Hannah (unknown maiden name.) He was born in Longwood, Huddersfield in about 1794. They had six children: John (born 1816), David (born 1825), Charlotte (born 1826), Frances (born 1832), Benjamin (born 1839) and Elizabeth (born 1840.) I am looking for any information on Benjamin's parents and Hannah's maiden name.
David married Rebecca Wood (born 1822 in Armley to George Wood and Elizabeth Teal) in 1848 in Leeds. They had seven children: Eliza (born 1849), Mary (born 1850), Isreal (born 1851 died 1873), Emma (born 1852), Charles (born 1853 died 1914), George (born 1855 died 1888) and Annie (born 1857 died 1911). All children were born in Wortley except Annie who was born in Guiseley. I believe David and Rebecca both died in Guiseley. Charles, George and Annie all immigrated to the United States where they settled in Massachusetts. The three generations I do have information on – Benjamin, David, and George – have their occupation noted as spinners in the textile industry. I would love any information on the sisters Eliza, Mary and Emma. I believe they remained in England. I am also in need of information on Rebecca Wood's family.

Whitfield
I've come to a dead end in my genealogy research and I'm wondering
if anyone can help. I'm searching for my father's father,
whom we never talked about because my father was illegitimate.
My father's name was Herbert Whitfield, son of Florence Annie Dooley
(m. Mabbott). He was born in June 1917 in (I think) Grantham. It's
believed by family that dad's father had been a soldier in the
First World War on leave in Mansfield. Grandma and dad lived in
Leeds (where my grandmother may have moved to nearer dad's father)from
1925 on, where they had moved from Mansfield Woodhouse in Notts.
She changed her name from Mabbott to Whitfield at the move. One
reason for the secrecy is that grandma had been married to a William
Mabbott at the time she became pregnant with dad. If anyone can
give me a lead so that I can get on with my ancestry search, I'd
be very grateful.

There is a Mich(yeo), presumed Michael, in the Startforth area who had four chldren between 1726-1737 there (I now all family line after that) but I don't know anything about Mich. Could he have been the Michael born in 1694? There is also a Michael who witnesses an apprenticeship of William & John Redhead from Startforth to Joseph Appleby (weaver) of Barnard Castle in 1735/36. There is also mention of a Michael in Preston Richard (Heversham) petitioning for arrears of relief for 3 children at Carlisle Q.S in 1729 (no link with Startforth known at present). Could the first three Michaels be one and the same, plus even the fourth as there are very few Michaels about in N.Yks, Sth Durham, Cumbria area,at this time? Any help would be very much appreciated.
