Badham
While searching online for information
on my g-uncle William Badham, I came across a possible
death in FreeBMD in Richmond Yk, 2nd qtr 1941, age 66,
which would make the deceased the right age. I thought
it might be possible to investigate the identity if there's
an obituary in a local paper. What would be a likely local
Newspaper in 1941?

I am interested in the Baggan family that lived in Pontefract, with seven daughters. I'm researching all six of them that married: Eccleston, Pickup, Ponsonby, Scholes, Sykes & Woffenden. The Baggin family that lived in Sheffield would have lived in Ireland for a time as one of the sons, George, was born there. Anyone have any of these names in their tree?

Barker and Stables
I am looking for information on this family. John Barker married Mary Stables in about 1825; they were both born about 1804-1806. Their children were Ann, born 1826; William born 1827; twins Benjamin and Johnathan born 1836; and twins Jane and Sarah born 1839. In the 1841 census the family was living in Bramley (civil parish), Leeds Borough, Yorkshire in the subregistration district of Kirkstall on Killingsbeck's Yard. John Barker's profession was in clothery. The census says they were all born in Yorkshire. I found a John Barker christened in Dobcross, Yorkshire on 12 Aug 1804 with parents William Barker and Ann. I don't know how to prove or disprove if this is my John Barker or not. I have found all of the chilren's birth dates on the LDS website. One of the twin daughters, Sarah, was born in Horsforth on 6 Aug 1838.
The entire family emigrated to the US and John Barker and Mary Stables are found in Akron, Ohio in the 1850 census. Daughter Ann has married Daniel Priest and is living in Wisconsin. The other children are either living in Akron or with Ann Barker Priest.
Is anyone researching this family in England? Does anyone have any hints as to where I might search next? I have more information after they came to the US but am looking for additional information in England. Although, I am still looking for the death date of John Barker, the father, and for his parents and the parents of Mary Stables.

They are relatives from Whitby whose son Barker Joseph Benson M.D. started our line here in Australia around 1842, leaving London, Gravesend in Feb 1841 for NZ with a return booked passage (that didn't happen). I am doing research on my father's family (Metcalf). My gr,gr,

was born between 1822 and 1824. Mary Ann was born 1819 in Holme
Upon Spaulding Moor. They were married in 1845 in Kirby Grindalythe.
His father was William Metcalf. I do not know his mothers name
but we are guessing it was Jane because their first born daughter
was named Jane. Charles and Mary Ann and their daughter Jane
sailed out of Liverpool and landed in New York in 1850. They
moved on and settled in Wisconsin where she had relatives. I
can not find any records with the name of Charles's place of

Black
I am trying to locate the family of William Alexander Black. Born
in 1887 in Didsbury Manchester, he married Elizabeth Bolam in 1915.
They had a son Alexander George in 1916. Sometime after that he
moved to Leeds Yorkshire. It is possible that there were other
children. Elizabeth Bolam/Black was known to be alive in 1949 when
she attended the funeral of her mother Margaret Bolam/Laverick.
I have an extensive family tree for the Black family. William
Alexander Black is the only one of my close family that I have
not been able to trace. He was my Uncle. Any information would

I am searching for descendants of Thomas B apparently born 16 January 1766 Eskdale,
grandson (apparently) of Henry Braythwaite of Irton. Thomas is, I hear, the
son of John B and Ruth Hartley. Is there anyone out there who can assist. I
believe that Thomas is buried in St Catherine's Churchyard, Eskdale. We would
love to know where the family hailed from originally ?

Braithwaite/Ibbotson
I'm researching Stephen Thompson Braithwite who was born about 1875 in Kendal, Westmorland and died in 1930 in Barnsley, Yorkshire. He married Lillian Ibbotson who was born about 1875 in Barnsley, Yorkshire.
They were married about 1898 in Barnsley, Yorkshire.
The 1911 census shows Stephen Braithwaite was living at 25 Longcar Street Barnsley with his daughter, Gwendoline, then aged 10 years.
However the 1911 census also shows Lillian Braithwaite (née Ibbotson) living at 103 Milton Road Hoyland, Barnsley as a house keeper to a James H Poxon & BMD index as Marriage - 1930 -Qtr 4 -Vol 9c - 608.
We can not find a death for Lillian Braithwaite, but can find one for Lillian Poxon in Sheffield.
I can find no trace of any other children for either Ibbotson, Braithwaite or Poxon.
There are further details of parents and siblings of both Lillian and James.
It looks like Lillian may have left Stephen Braithwaite to live with James Poxon who she married only when Stephen died.
Any help on this part of my family would very much appreciated, thank you.

England, daughter of John Acomb and Ann Kay. She was born July 12, 1772 (this

Notes for Ann Acomb: The name Acomb means "the
site of the Oak Trees". As well as being a family name in
Yorkshire at one time (very few people with the name Acomb are
still in the Yorkshire area), it was also the name of a small village
to the west of York, England, but today it is part of the suburbs.
Acombs can be traced back to the 1600's in the village of Long
Marston, which is 4 miles west of Acomb on the Wetherby Road. Joseph
was the most common name, followed by Thomas, Quentin, John, William
and Henry. They seem to be farmers and Church Wardens. Child of
Martin Braithwaite and Ann Acomb is:
2. i. Mary Braithwaite, b. December 06, 1797, North Newbald, England
(also have Christening June 12, 1797).

Braithwaite
I am looking for relatives of William Braithwaite, born in 1895 in Dacre Banks, and his wife Evelyn Townsend, also born in 1895.
They married in 1924 and lived in Follifoot. They had three children – Jean, born 1925, George, born 1926 who died soon after birth and Derek, born 1929.
I think Derek died in 1999 in Beverley. I do not know if he was married or had children. Jean did marry but unfortunately I do not know her married name. I think she had two boys and that she lived in Harrogate within the last ten years.
I have several photos and letters about this family that their relatives might be interested to see.

My Father was Frederik Laurence Bramley, who lived in Nottingham. He was in the Army as a young man and then worked for Rolls Royce Co. My Mother was Joyce Emily Candlin from Berkshire. I have been told his mother, my Grandmother was pure Romany Gypsy, and my Grandfather was a good musician. I myself play guitar and sing. Sadly I never met them and I would be so proud to have a photo of my Grandmother and Grandfather. Brayshaw / Lassey (Lacy) / Stokes / Kaye
I am searching for the family of John William Brayshaw b. abt. 1776 probably
in York. Married 1795 in York, Yorkshire to Mary Sykes Stokes b. 1778. John
William died 4 April 1848 in Yorkshire. They had the following children:
Sarah b. 7 July 1803; Nancy b. 7 April 1806; Elizabeth b. 20 Aug. 1808
married 7 August 1831 in Almondbury, Yorkshire, to Joseph Kaye: Harriet
M. Brayshaw b.15 April 1811 married 25 Dec 1830 in Almondbury to Abraham
Kaye (brother of Joseph); William b. 30 Oct 1813, married 13 August 1838
in Parish Church, Parish of Dewsbury, York County to Julia Lacy (daughter
of Squire Lassey and wife Hannah Greenwood); James b. 9 April 1819 m. Jane
Melville.
We believe that Sargent John William Brayshaw fought in the 51st Foot Regiment
in the Battle of Waterloo but cannot find proof. Census return for 1841 for
Linthwaite: "John Brayshaw, 65, clothier,
Mary Brayshaw, wife, 60, Charlotte, 15".
The Lassey (Lacy) family lived in Boothroyd, a
section of Dewsbury. Squire Lassey, age 50 and Hannah (Greenwood)
Lassey, age 55, were the parents of Julia Lassey married to William
Brayshaw. Edward, age 15, and Joseph, age 13 were their sons and
brothers to Julia. Joseph, age 6 and Hannah, age 2, must have been
grandchildren of their son, Thomas. Thomas names a son, Joseph
and daughter, Hannah in his Will signed 19 July 1868. He was spelling
his name Lacy by this time and lived in Boothroyd Lane in Dewsbury
in the County of York.
The Brayshaws, William and wife Julia Lacy Brayshaw
emigrated to America and arrived in January 1841. It appears that
this was about the same time that Elizabeth Brayshaw Kaye and husband,
Joseph Kaye as well as Harriet Brayshaw Kaye and husband Abraham
Kaye emigrated to America. They settled initially in the Baltimore
area.

Brear
I am researching my family name of Brear. My father, George Henry, was born 25 May 1922 at Vernon Place, Undercliffe, Bradford.
His parents were Thomas Brear born 17.7.1872 at Lambert Row, Bolton, Bradford who got married on 21.7.1902 to Elizabeth (née Fletcher) born 13.7.1877 at Malt Kiln Fold (the Fletchers worked at Guiseley Brickworks, Yeadon). They ran the Green Man Inn at Undercliffe, Bradford, and they also worked for a time at the Lamb Inn, Dewsbury and Scarborough where the pub/hotel was The Oxford I think. Then they returned to Vernon Place, Undercliffe, Bradford.
Thomas' parents were George Brear born 29.8.1874, Back Fold, Manningham, Bradford and Sarah Ann Tempest, born 1847 at Malt Kiln Inn, Bradford. They married on 13.8.1870. Sarah Ann died on 29.4.1873 and Thomas was brought up by his grandparents (Joshua and Ann Tempest) at The Malt Kiln Inn, Idle Road, Bolton, Bradford.
George got married again to Hannah Ellen Broadley in 1874 in Bradford. They had 5 children: Harriet, John, Florence, Ida E, James Herbert. George was a train driver and worked in various posts for the Railway Co. living in Keighley and in the 1911 census in Holbeck, Leeds.
George's parents were John Brear, christened 23.2.1816, Bradford and who married, on 5.2.1842 in Bradford, Jane Stott who was born at New Church on Rosantale, Lancs.
John's father was also John. I think he married a woman called Martha.
This is where my research stops. If anyone knows any information that could be useful please let me know.

Broadhead
I am researching my father's family, the Broadheads who lived in Barnsley.
My grandfather was called Edward, he was born in 1896. He was sent to live
in Canada at the age of 14 - with his mother's brother & family. Edward's
mother was born Caroline Agnes Taylor in 1871, & his father Alfred
William Broadhead in 1868. They married in 1892. Caroline had 8 siblings:George
(1867), Arthur (1869), Amy (1875), Percy (1877), Frederick (1879), Harold (1881),
Harry (1883) & Florina (1884). Amy went to New Zealand in the early part
of the 20th century, Caroline & Alfred going with them. Alfred died there
a few years later. Edward had a brother called Harry. My grandfather lived
with Frederick Taylor in Winnipeg, Frederick having moved there around the
same time I believe as Caroline & Alfred taking the family to NZ. Caroline's
parents were Caroline Witpen & George Taylor. Caroline Taylor's father
accidentally drowned in the 1890's which appears to be suicide. Alfred's parents
were Hannah Rogers & Samuel Broadhead - they were schoolmasters
in the Barnsley area at West Bretton School. Alfred had 4 siblings: Gertrude
(1871), Florence (1872), Harry (1881) & Muriel (1882). Samuel's parents
were Joshua Broadhead & Mary Goddard. Samuel had the following siblings:
John (1841), David (1843), Sarah (1844), Joshua (1848), Mary (1850), Ann (1851),
Lydia (1853), Leila (1855) & Clara (1859) All born is Austonley. I have
marriages so far for (besides Samuel!) John & David. Joshua's father was
a John Broadhead - I think I may have located his mother, she was called Lydia
Butterworth! From the info I was directed to, I can trace the family back to
around 1600. I wondered if anyone might have any info on the Broadhead or Taylor
families........any help would be greatly appreciated.

Brough
In 1816 my great-great-great-grandfather, Richard Gospel, married a girl called Elizabeth Brough who came from Gilling, near York. Elizabeth already had a daughter, Mary, who had been born out of wedlock in 1814. Richard took the girl on and treated her as his own. Richard died in 1840 leaving mother and daughter together with six children that Richard had fathered alone. They lived in Bishop Wilton near Pocklington and Mary went into service at nearby villages. She had four illegitimate children, all boys, who took the name Brough. As the family extended some took York as a base, some moved to North Yorkshire, to Pontefract and Worksop and a girl called Rhoda Brough married into a family called Hall at Pateley bridge. I would welcome any information about these families as I am relatively well advanced in my quest to complete the family to present days and now want to share this information and put some flesh onto the bones of the family tree.

Burbeck/Birbeck/Birkbeck
I am trying to find more information about the family of my ancestor Edward Burbeck who was born on May 14, 1683 in Yorkshire and sailed to Boston in 1706. He had a sister named Elinor whose first husband was William Lees of Dorchester and second husband was John Savill of Wakefield. Edward and Elinor's father's name may have been William and their mother's name was Mary. William had a brother in York who was a doctor. It is unconfirmed but I believe it was Christopher Birbeck/Birkbeck who was born in Aldborough and lived in York where he died in 1717. His father's name was Edward Birbeck/Birkbeck and he died in 1674. Any help on this line would be greatly appreciated.

My maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Anne Robinson (nee Burns), was
the neice of Robert Burns, schoolmaster at Great Fryup. The 1881
census has him and his family living at the school cottage and
he was still there for the 1901 census. He, like my grandmother
was born in Manchester, but they seem to have had family connections
in Whitby and York. My aunt Phyllis, as a teenager, visited them
and a cousin Gertrude who lived at a 'farm at Robin Hoods Bay
sometime around 1920. There was an Elsie Burns at this time who
lived in Whitby. The family links seem to be Manchester, Salford,
York and Whitby. All my immediate Robinson family connections
are now dead.
